CROMOLYN SODIUM: Nursing Considerations
- Available as nasal solutions, nebulizer solution, and PO
- Full therapeutic effect may take several weeks
- PO: take 30 minutes before meals, do not crush
- Not appropriate for acute asthma

TERBUTALINE SULFATE: Nursing Considerations
- Inhalation and subQ used for short-term control; PO as long-term
- PO: take with food to decrease GI upset
- Contact provider if unrelieved shortness of breath
- Do not use OTC meds without contacting provider

IPRATROPIUM BROMIDE: Nursing Considerations
- Can use with spacer
- Not for acute bronchospasm needing rapid response
- Teach use of metered dose inhaler: inhale, hold breath, exhale slowly
- Don’t mix in nebulizer with cromolyn sodium
- Assess for hypersensitivity, including soy products, atropine, peanuts
- Encourage 10–12 glasses water/day
- Avoid OTC cough/hay-fever medications
- Use caution with hazardous activities

- Blurred vision

IPRATROPIUM BROMIDE: Purpose
Treatment of bronchospasms, COPD, and rhinorrhea
BENZONATATE: Nursing Considerations
- PO: onset 15–20 minutes, duration 3–8 hours
- Capsules should be swallowed whole; do not chew, because release of med may cause local anesthetic effect and choking
- Avoid activities requiring alertness until response to med is known
- Rx; Preg Cat C
BENZONATATE: Side Effects
- Dizziness
- Drowsiness
- Rash
- Sedation, headache
- Nausea
- Constipation
BENZONATATE: Purpose
Treatment of nonproductive cough
TIOTROPIUM: Nursing Considerations
- Take once daily
- Oral inhalation: onset 30 minutes, peak 2 hours, duration 24 hours
- Teach how to correctly use inhaler: insert dry powder capsule into inhaler device just before inhalation; do not swallow capsules; rinse mouth with water after inhalation (decreases side effects)
- Do not use as a rescue inhaler (delayed onset, long duration of action)

TIOTROPIUM: Side Effects
- Oral thrush
- Vomiting, abdominal pain
- Skeletal pain
- Pharyngitis
- Cough, URI
- Depression, paresthesia
- Chest pain, increased heart rate
- Dry mouth
- Urinary difficulty
TIOTROPIUM: Purpose
Prevention of bronchial swelling and bronchospasms associated with COPD
THEOPHYLLINE: Nursing Considerations
- PO: peak 2 hours; take with full glass of water; best on empty stomach
- Check all OTC and other meds for ephedrine before taking with this med
- Avoid alcohol, caffeine, smoking
- Avoid activities requiring alertness until response to med is known
- Contact provider if toxicity: nausea, vomiting, anxiety, insomnia, convulsions
- Drink 8–10 glasses of fluid per day
