Genetic Variation Flashcards
Describe random assortment
Random arrangement of homologous pairs and then random separation of sister chromatids.
The result that sex cells produced will always have a different assortment of the potential genetic information.
Describe crossing over
The homologous pairs(during metaphase) will random to swap their genetic information with each other, resulting in a totally new combinations.
Describe non disjunction
At times a mistake will be made when the chromatids are separating during anaphase 2.
When this happens there may be two of the same chromosomes in the same cell and another one with no copies of that data.
What is genetic variation?
Needed to ensure the survival of a species in a changing situation. Ot is achieved during meiosis in a number of ways: random assortment, crossing over and non disjunction
