What is the ductous venosus?

A

Liver bypass for the blood. After birth this duct closes slowing blood to flow through to the liver

What is the ductous arteriosis?

A

Lung bypass of the blood. After birth this duct closes allowing blood to flow through to the lungs

What is the foramen ovale?

A

Opening in the heart that allows blood to flow from the right atrium to the aorta. After birth this closes allowing normal blood flow

If this does not close after birth it is know as “hole in the heart”.

What changes occur at birth?

A

The umbilical arteries and veins stop functioning. Hepatic shunt closes and hepatic circulation becomes fully functioning. Cardiac shunt closes and pulmonary circulation becomes fully functioning
