What is the Rhythm method?
Calculating period of ovulation and avoiding sex during that time
What is the temperature method?
Calculating period of ovulation by mapping female body temperature
What is the mucous method?
Calculating the period of ovulation by mapping changes in female mucous production
What is the sympothermal method?
A combination of methods. For example rhythm and temperature
What is the most reliable hormones contraceptive method?
The contraceptive pill
What does an oestrogen pill do?
Sends False messages to the brain to prevent ovulation
What do progesterone pills do?
Cause a mucous plug in the cervix to prevent sperm from entering the uterus
What is the combined pill?
Oestrogen and progesterone pill
What is the mini pill?
Progesterone only pill but needs to be taken at the same time everyday to be effective
What is depo provera?
Progesterone injection that lasts 12-14weeks
What is implanon?
Slow release progesterone capsule that is inserted beneath the skin that lasts 3 years
What is a nuvaring?
Soft plastic ring in vagina, slow release oestrogen and progesterone that lasts 3 weeks
What is a vasectomy?
The vas deferens is cut to prevent sperm leaving the testes
What is tubal ligation?
Fallopian tubes are cut or sealed to prevent fertilisation
What is the morning after pill?
Emergency contraception after intercourse to prevent implantation. High levels of oestrogen and progesterone
What is an abortion pill?
Blocks the production of progesterone needed to sustain a pregnancy
What is termination?
The removal of an embryo after implantation. It is risk free up to 12 weeks
What is contraception?
The prevention of the female becoming pregnant as a result of intercourse
