What is spermatogenesis?
The production of sperm in the male reproductive system
What are sperm?
The male gametes/reproductive cells
Where does spermatogenesis occur?
In the testes of the male reproductive system
Describe the structure of a sperm
The head- contains nucleus that carries 23 chromosomes
The acrosome- cap over the head that contains enzymes to break down the follicle surrounding the ovum
The middle piece- contains mitochondria to power the tail
The tail- flagellum that acts like a propeller
What is oogenesis?
The production of ova(eggs) in the female reproductive system
What is an ovum?
(Egg) or ova (eggs) are the female gametes/reproductive cells
Where does oogenesis occur?
In the ovaries of the female reproductive system
Describe the structure of an ovum
The oocyte- immature ovum
Zona pellucida- protective layer surrounding the ovum
Corona radiata- second protective layer
What is gametogenesis?
The production of sperm and egg cells(gametes) by meiosis
