Genetic Key Words Flashcards
What’s A phenotype?
The physical appearance of an individual regarding a particular characteristics
What is a genotype?
The genetic makeup of an individual regarding a particular characteristics
What’s a alleles?
Alternative forms of a gene
What’s a dominant gene?
Alleles which will always be expressed in the phenotype (physical apperance) shown as a capital letters example: B
What’s a recessive gene?
Alleles that can be masked by a dominant one, so they will only be shown in the phenotype in the absence of a dominant gene - it is shown as a lower case letter Example: b
What does homozygous mean ?
Bath alleles (genes) are the same - example: bb or Bb
What does heterozygous mean?
The alleles (genes) are different- example : Bb
What are gametes?
The sex cells (ova and sperm)
They only contain one set of chromosomes so can only carry one of the two alleles that the parents have in their cells
What are offspring?
The generation resulting from reproduction
