What is the endocrine system?
A number of glands that secrete and control hormones throughout the body
It also secretes these hormones straight into the bloodstream
What are the specific parts of the body that are only effected by specific hormones called?
Target organs
What type of signalling does the endocrine system use? And what are the traits of it?
.Chemical signalling, that is carried in the blood stream
.It has a slower effect but lasts for long periods off time
What type of signalling does the nervous system use? And what are the traits of it?
.Electrical impulses, that travel down neurones
.They are very fast acting, but the effects only last a very short duration

What is oestrogen and what does it do?
.Its a female sex hormone
.It promotes female secondary sexual characteristics
.A major role in the menstrual cycle

.Controls blood sugar levels
.Stimulates glucose to be stored as glycogen in the liver

What does progestogen do?
.Supports pregnancy
.Maintains uterus lining during pregnancy
What does FSH do ?
It causes an egg in the ovary to mature and makes to ovaries produce more oestrogen
What does ADH do?
.Regulates bodily hydration
.Increases permeability of water collecting duct so more is re absorbed back into the blood
.Prevents dehydration
