Controlling blood glucose Flashcards
What can cause an increase in blood glucose levels?
Eating sugary foods or foods rich in carbohydrates
What can cause a decrease in blood glucose levels?
vigerous exercise
Where is excess glucose stored?
It is stored as glycogen in the liver and muscles
What hormones control blood glucose levels?
Insulin and glucagon
What happens if your blood glucose levels are to high?
1) Insulin is added to your blood stream
2)Excess glucose is turned into glycogen and stored in the liver and muscles
What happens if your blood glucose levels are to low?
1)Glucagon is added to the blood stream
2)Glycogen is turned back into glucose and released back into the blood stream
What are the key hormones in controlling blood glucose?
Insulin-
Lowers blood glucose levels
by turning excess glucose into glycogen
Glycogen-
Stores excess glucose
Glucagon-Turns glycogen back into glucose
What is type 1 diabetes?
When your body produces little to no insulin
What’s type 2 diabetes?
When your body still produces insulin but your has become insulin resistant, and stops responding to it
What are some treatments for type 1 diabetes?
.Insulin therapy / manually injecting insulin
.Diet/ restricting foods that are high in carbohydrates
.Regular exercise helps to remove excess glucose from the blood
What are some treatments for type 2 diabetes?
.A healthy diet that restricts/ limits the consumption of carbohydrate dense foods
.Regular exercise to help remove excess glucose from the blood
What are the main risk factors of type 2 diabetes?
Obesity and genetics
