Ways to promote generalization of BX change:
- Reinforce occurrences of generalization
- Train skills that contact Natural Contingencies of SR
- Modify Contingencies of SR and PUN in natural environment
- Incorporate Variety of relevant stimulus situations in training
- Incorporate common stimuli
- Teach range of functionally equivalent responses
- Provide cues in natural environment
- Incorporate self-generated mediators of GEN
EX:
Teach children to appropriately ask for their peer to share a toy-> Teachers provide praise to child when appropriately ask for toy to any peer in free play
Reinforce occurrences of generalization:
EX:
Teach child to use communication device to order food -> restaurant workers will likely provide them with the food they requested via device
Train skills that contact Natural Contingencies of SR
EX:
Counselor taught how to response when others tease child -> counselor met with staff at her school and taught them to provide praise and token each time they observe child use appropriately responding to teasing
Modify Contingencies of SR and PUN in natural environment
EX:
Teach child w autism to wave when people greet them -> various people, various greetings, various settings -> wave with new people, new greetings, and in new settings
Incorporate Variety of relevant stimulus situations in training
Ex:
Child with autism taught to appropriately request toys from peer -> peers from their classroom
Incorporate common stimuli
Ex:
Worker learning to say no to unreasonable requests -> practice variety of responses
Teach range of functionally equivalent responses
Ex;
Staff taught to wash hands correctly & at specific times when working in hospital -> post sings as a reminder to wash hands
Provide cues in natural environment
Ex:
Parents attend training on child behavior management procedure and take notes -> parents review their notes to guide their implementation of the procedure
