Fear and Anxiety Flashcards
unpleasant bodily responses to operant and respondent behavior in presence of particular stimulus or stimulus situation
Anxiety
Strategies people use to decrease autonomic arousal that involve engaging in bodily responses opposite to the autonomic arousal; engage in relaxation exercises to decrease muscle tension, heart rate, breathing rate, and to warm the hands
Relaxation training
4 types of relaxation training
- Progressive Muscle relaxation
- Diaphragmatic Breathing
- Attention-Focusing Exercises
- Behavioral Relaxation Training
person systematically tenses and relazes each of the major muscle groups in body
Progressive Muscle relaxation
Person breaths in slow, rhythmic fashion to replace reapid, shallow breathing when anxious
Diaphragmatic Breathing
person directs attention to a neutral or pleasant stimulus to remove attention form anxiety-producing stimulus
Attention-Focusing Exercises
person taught to relax each muscle group in body by assuming relaxed postures
Behavioral Relaxation Training
Two types of Attention Focusing Exercises:
- Meditation
2. Guided imagery
person focuses attention on visual, auditory, or kinesthetic stimulus
Meditation
person visualized or imagines pleasant scenes/ images
Guided imagery
Person with phobia practices relaxation while imagining scenes of fear-producing stimulus
Systematic Desensitization
client gradually approaches or is gradually exposed to actual fear-producing stimulus
In Vivo desensitization
Difference between Systematic and In-Vivo desensitization
- Systematic: imagines fear producing scenes
- In Vivo: exposed to actual fear producing stimulus
person is exposed to fear stimulus at full intensity for prolonged period of time until anxiety subsides in presence of feared stimulus
Flooding
- Jesse has fear of heights. How would you use in vivo desensitization to help Jesse with his fear of heights?
- Create a hierarchy of his fear on 10 different levels
- Start at least fear provoking level and complete until no fear/anxiety associated with it
- Move to next level and complete until no fear/ anxiety associated with it
- Repeat until most fear provoking task is complete without fear/ anxiety associated with it
