General Ecology Chapter 17 Flashcards
Biodiversity
genetic diversity, genetic variation within species, community diversity, the variation among communities, and species diversity, the diversity among species.
Organismic model
individuals, populations, and communities have a relationship to each other that resembles the associations found between cells, tissues, and organs.
Individualistic model
viewed community as an assemblage of species coexisting primarily because of similarities in their physiological requirements and tolerance.
Principle of species individuality
stated that each species is distributed according to its physiological needs, that most communities intergrade continuously, and that competition does not create distinct vegetational zones.
Species richness
count of the number of species
Relative abundance
species frequency of occurence
Effective number of species
traditional diversity indices
Similarity indices
compare diversity of sites directly
