General 7 Altimetry Flashcards
What are the notified units of measurements of pressure for the UK?
Hectopascals
When set to QNH, what is the altimeter showing?
Altitude
When set to QFE, what is the altimeter showing?
Height above airfield elevation (or the reference datum)
Describe the RPS
Regional Pressure Setting
The lowest forecast QNH value within an Altimeter Setting Region
Define Transition Altitude
The altitude at or below which the vertical position of an aircraft is controlled by reference to altitude.
Define Transition Level
The lowest Flight Level available for use above the transition altitude, separated from the TA by at least 1000ft.
Define Transition Layer
The airspace between the Transition Altitude and the Transition Level
Unless otherwise notified, what is the UK Transition Altitude?
3000ft
How is the transition level determined inside and outside of controlled airspace?
Inside CAS - By the controlling authority based on a major aerodrome QNH
Outside CAS - By the aerodrome operator based on local QNH
When is the ATCO required to state the units (hPa) of the pressure setting?
When the pressure is lower than 1000hPa
What is aerodrome elevation based on and when is a separate elevation given?
The highest point of the landing area
A separate elevation is given for the threshold of Precision Approach RWYs or if the threshold is 7ft or more below AD elevation.
How close to the CAS boundary can an ATCO descend an aircraft?
Unless leaving controlled airspace by descent or climb, aircraft should not be allocated a level that provides less than 500 ft separation from CAS boundary.
