General 6 Surveillance Systems Flashcards
What should an ATCO do if a pilot requests deviation due to weather?
(1) Accommodate such requests, taking into account the prevailing traffic situation
(2) Request the pilot to report when able to accept vectors back on-track
(3) If the ATCO cannot accommodate, a reason should be given and an alternative clearance offered
What should an ATCO do if weather deviation will take a pilot out of controlled airspace?
(1) Inform the pilot of this and offer an appropriate service
(2) Issue a clearance to rejoin as required
What can surveillance systems be used to provide, whether or not the aircraft has been identified?
(1) Information on aircraft likely to constitute a hazard
(2) Avoiding action
(3) Information about observed weather
(4) Assistance to aircraft in emergency
What identification methods are there using PSR?
Turn Method
Departing Aircraft Method
Position Report Method
Describe the Turn Method of PSR Identification
When the ATCO correlates a particular position indication with
(1) Execution of an instruction by the ATCO to change heading by at least 30°
(2) One or more heading changes of at least 30° as instructed by another ATCO
(3) One or more heading changes of at least 30° as reported by the pilot
Does a turn for identification constitute the provision of a surveillance service?
No
Describe the Departing Aircraft Method of PSR Identification
When the ATCO correlates a particular position indication with its known airborne time within 1NM of the runway end, unless authorised by the CAA.
Describe the Position Report Method of PSR Identification
When the ATCO correlates a particular position indications track with a report from the pilot that the aircraft is
(1) Over an exact reporting point on the situation display
(2) On a radial from a VOR/DME which is on the situation display and within 30NM of that VOR/DME
(3) Over a notified VRP or Geographical Feature approved for the purposed and found on the situation display
All within known PSR Cover
When operating inside controlled airspace, when should a pilot be informed that their aircraft is identified?
Only when identification is achieved by the Turn Method.
Describe the methods of SSR identification
(1) Observing the pilot’s compliance with the instruction to select a discrete four-digit code
(2) Recognising a validated four-digit code previously assigned to an aircraft callsign
(3) Observing an IDENT
Describe the ways that Mode A codes are validated
(1) Instructing the aircraft to squawk the assigned code and observing that the correct numbers appear
(2) Instructing the aircraft to “squawk IDENT” and observing the code associated with the IDENT
(3) Matching an already identified Position Indication with the assigned code for the flight
What are the three emergency squawk codes?
7500 - Hijack
7600 - Radio Failure
7700 - Mayday
What type of Surveillance Services are provided inside and outside of controlled airspace?
Inside CAS - Radar Control Service
Outside CAS - Deconfliction or Traffic Service
