Definition of GDM
Gestational diabetes mellitus is defined as abnormal glucose tolerance that is detected or develops in pregnancy
What are the risk factors to developing GDM?
- overweight/obesity
- excessive weight gain in pregnancy
- family history of diabetes
- over 30 years of age
- previous history of gestational diabetes
- poor obstetric history – unexplained stillbirth, miscarriage
- previous large baby or babies
- ethnicity (some women from certain ethnic backgrounds are at
higher risk) - polycystic ovarian syndrome.
A women with a normal HbA1c, BMI and no family history of diabetes or GDM. Which test would you recommended?
- 1 hour Polycose test
Because there are no increase risk factors that suggest a GTT is required
What is the normal range of a polycose test?
3.0 - 7.8
A wahine with a normal BMI and a HbA1c of 40 mmoL and a sister who had GDM what glucose test would you recommended?
I would recommend the 2 hour GTT test. Because she had a high HbA1c and has a family history of GDM
What is the normal range of the Fasting & 2hr glucose test?
Fasting Glucose < 5.5
2.0Hr Glucose < 9.0
How much sugar is in the 1 hour test drink?
50g
75g is how much sugar in the drink for which test?
GTT/Fasting
