Define Amniotic fluid embolism

A

When amniotic fluid and/or foetal cells enter the maternal circulation which cause an allergic-type of a reaction. Usually occurring around the birth.

  • Hypotension
  • Cardiac arrest
  • Hypoxaemia or respiratory distress
  • haermorrhage or coagulopathy

  • Light-headedness - Chest pain
  • Vomiting - pulmonary oedema
  • neurological seizures - Foetal bradycardia

A
  • 30 > age - Abdominal trauma
  • Intense uterine contractions
    Drug/physiological
  • Section - IUD
  • Cervical tear
  • Premature serration of the placenta
