Define Amniotic fluid embolism
A
When amniotic fluid and/or foetal cells enter the maternal circulation which cause an allergic-type of a reaction. Usually occurring around the birth.

Acute signs of AFE?
A
- Hypotension
- Cardiac arrest
- Hypoxaemia or respiratory distress
- haermorrhage or coagulopathy

Common Signs of a AFE
A
- Tingling - Numbness
- Light-headedness - Chest pain
- Vomiting - pulmonary oedema
- neurological seizures - Foetal bradycardia

What are associated risk factors for AFE?
A
- 30 > age - Abdominal trauma
- Intense uterine contractions
Drug/physiological - Section - IUD
- Cervical tear
- Premature serration of the placenta
