- chronic infection w/ H. Pylori.
Are incidence declining in Canada? How?

o gastric cancers tend to be larger
o irregularly shaped and irregular margins
describes the symptoms
- asymptomatic until late in course
- symptoms are usually vague
and non-specific - early detection is difficult
Manifestations
- symptoms are vague and include: Indigestion, anorexia, weight loss, vague epigastric pain, vomiting, and an abdominal mass
Diagnosis:
- barium x-ray
- endoscopic studies w/ biopsy
- cytologic studies of gastric secretions eg Papanicolaou smear (done routinely)
- CT and endoscopic U/S to note the spread of CA
treatment
- depends on location and extent
- sx eg radical subtotal gastrectomy
- irradiation and chemo (not useful as primary tx)
What purpose do the treatment have?
for palliative care and control metastatic spread of diease
What is the treatment of choice
sx in the form of radical subtotal gastrectomy
