Gases Flashcards
Gas behavior is model by what?
Kinetic Molecular Theory of Gases.
How do gases behave according to the Kinetic Molecular Theory of Gases?
•small particles that move randomly and quickly in straight paths
• gas particles are far apart (mostly empty space)
•Assumes the shape of container
•collides with other gases/walls of container
•does not react with each other
What is gas pressure?
The pressure caused by collisions of gas molecules against the sides of a container
How to convert degrees Celsius to Kelvin?
C + 273 = K
Pressure is measured in what?
mmHg or atm
Volume is measured in what?
L or mL
Convert 1L to mL?
1L = 1000 mL
How do gases react with volume changes?
Gases fill any container they are in
Larger container (more volume) → lower pressure (less collisions)
Smaller container (less volume) → higher pressure (more collisions)
What Law involves Pressure and Volume?
Boyles Law
P1V1 = P2V2
How do gases react with changes in Temperature?
Gases expands in higher temperatures (particles move faster/more collisions)
They contract in lower temperatures (particles move slower/less collision)
What Law involves Temperature and Volume?
Charles’s Law
V1 = V2

T1 T2
In breathing, how does inhalation work?
Diaphragm contracts (moves down) so volume of thoracic cavity increases and pressure inside lungs decreases
Air flows from an area of high pressure(outside the body) to an area of low pressure (inside lungs)
In breathing, how does exhaling work?
Diaphragm relaxes (moves back up)
Volume in thoracic cavity decreases
Pressure inside lungs increases
Air flows from area of high pressure (inside lungs) to low pressure (outside body)
When diaphragm moves down, where does air move?
Into the lungs
When diaphragm moves up, where does air move?
Out of lungs
