Gait Initiation And Termination Flashcards
What is gait initiation considered?
Anticipatory postural response
What are the 2 phases of gait initiation?
Release phase and unloading phase
What happens during the release phase when initiating a step with the right foot?
The COP moves in a posterior direction (accomplished by relaxation of the plantar flexors and activation of right foot dorsiflexors)
What happens to the COP during the unloading phase of gait initiation?
Moves forward on the stance foot
What happens to the COM during the unloading phase of gait initiation?
Moves forward by contraction of the left plantar flexors
What are the 3 phases of gait termination?
Braking
Transition
Stabilization
How does the COP move during the braking phase of gait termination?
Forward and lateral on the first leg that stops allowing for COM deceleration
What is the braking phase of gait termination influenced by?
Step length (short step length can limit braking ability)
Where does the pressure move during the transition phase of gait termination?
Transferred to the leg that first stops and COM moves laterally
What happens to speed during the transition phase of gait termination?
Decreases and the leg is brought up to the ground
How does COP join COM during the stabilization phase of gait termination?
By completing a short correction posterior and medial
