Deviation Of Knees Flashcards
What are the major deviations of the knee during gait?
Limited flexion, Hyperextension, extension thrust
Excess flexion, contralateral excess flexion
Varus and valgus
Wobbling
What is extension thrust?
Forceful motion of knee toward extension
When may Hyperextension of the knee occur in gait?
Weight acceptance
What is reduced when there is increased extension of the knee during gait?
Shock absorption and forward momentum of tibia
What is at a risk for injury if there is excessive extension of the knee during gait?
Posterior capsule of the knee
Why does increased knee extension occur with quad weakness?
To move the GRF anterior to the knee axis but extension is maintained by posterior ligaments of knee not the quads
How does limited flexion of knee affect swing limb advancement?
Leads to toe drag because knee cannot flex enough to get clearance
How does excess knee flexion affect weight acceptance and single limb support?
Increases demands on plantarflexors, quads, and hip extensors and decreases limb stability
How does excess flexion of knee affect swing limb advancement?
Decreases step length of reference limb and may interfere with heel first contact
When does excess contralateral flexion of knee occur during gait?
Swing phase of reference limb
What does excess contralateral flexion of knee during gait interfere with?
Foot clearance and limb advancement
When do varus and valgus occur during gait?
Single limb support
What is wobbling?
Alternating extension and flexion of knee during a single phase of gait
What is wobbling caused by?
Spasticity of quads or plantar flexors or impaired proprioception
When does wobbling most commonly occur?
Weight acceptance and single limb support
