Deviations Of Ankle Flashcards
What can excess plantar flexion cause to happen during gait?
Foot flat contact
Forefoot contact
Heel off
Drag
Foot slap
What can excess dorsiflexion cause to happen during gait?
No heel off
How does excess plantar flexion affect initial contact?
May cause foot flat or forefoot contact in initial contact which can limit shock absorption
What is heel off gait?
When the heel does not touch the floor all the way through gait
What is a secondary impairment to excess plantar flexion during gait?
Knee extension
What are the consequences of excess plantar flexion in swing?
Toe drag
What is contralateral vaulting?
Rising on forefoot of contralateral limb during swing limb advancement to try and raise affected foot higher and avoid drag
When does a rigid contracture of plantar flexors contribute to gait?
All the way through
When does elastic contracture and pretibial weakness contribute to gait?
Swing phase to initial contact (not in stance phase)
What is a foot slap?
Occurs when pretibial muscles are strong enough to provide heel first contact in initial contact followed by rapid plantar flexion
What is no heel off gait?
When the heel stays on the floor all the way through gait
How does no heel off affect the swing phase of gait?
Results in limited knee flexion which can limit knee clearance in swing resulting in drag
