Deviation Of Hips Flashcards
What are the major deviations of the hip in gait?
Limited flexion
Past retract
Excess flexion
What are the minor deviations of the hip in gait?
Adduction
Abduction
IR
ER
How does limited flexion of the hip affect gait?
Interferes with ability to clear foot and advance swing limb
What decreases when there is limited flexion of the hip in gait?
Step length
What is past retract?
Forward and then backward movement of thigh during terminal swing (hip extends prior to initial contact)
What does excess flexion of the hip do to the contralateral leg?
Decreases its step length
How does excess flexion affect gait?
It may be done in order to get limb clearance due to excess Plantarflexion
What does adduction of the hip do during swing?
Increase length of limb to interfere with limb clearance
What does adduction of the hip during stance do?
Decrease width of base of support and limb stability
Why does hip abduction occur during swing?
Due to a long reference limb (compensatory to allow clearance)
Why does hip IR occur in stance intentionally?
To stabilize knee because of quad weakness
What does IR of the hip impair during gait?
Forward progression
What is ER of the hip a substitution for?
Weak hip flexors
What does ER of the hip during gait result in?
Shorten limb to help with clearance
