Health defined by WHO
A state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being - not merely the absence of disease or infirmity
Healthy people 2020 goals
- attain high quality, and longer lives
- achieve health equity (improve health of all groups)
- create social and physical environments that promote good health for all
- promote quality of life across all stages
Health belief model
- 3 components
Addresses the relationship between a person’s beliefs and behaviors
Components:
-individual’s perception to susceptibility to illness
-individual’s perception of seriousness of illness
-likelihood that person will take preventative action
Health promotion model
Directed @ increasing patient’s level of well-being
Levels of prevention
- primary: true prevention (eg. Flu vaccine)
- secondary: have disease or at risk for disease (eg. Promoting exercise for type 2 diabetes)
- tertiary: defect or disability permanent (eg. Physical therapy)
Stages of health behavior change
- pre contemplation: not making changes on next six months
- contemplation: considering change in next six months
- preparation: making small changes in preparation for change in the next month
- action: engaged in change; lasts up to 6 months
- maintenance: sustained change; continues inevitably
Illness defined and its two types
-person’s physical, emotional, intellectual, social, developmental, or spiritual function diminished
•Acute: short and severe
•Chronic: longer than six months
Illness behavior defined and its two variables
-how people monitor their bodies and define and interpret symptoms
•Internal: Perception of illness and nature of illness
•External: visibility of symptoms, social groups, cultural background, economics, accessibility to healthcare
