Q

What are some techniques to help in turbulence?

A

Turbulent Air Penetration Speed (Vb):
Turbulent air penetration speed provides high/low speed margins in severe turbulence. Normally, it is more comfortable to slow when encountering turbulence. As turbulence intensifies, airspeed may need to be increased to avoid stalling. Increase speed as necessary up to turbulent air penetration speed. Pilots must not exceed turbulent air penetration speed to avoid structural damage. Consider descending to increase buffet margin.

Airspeed:
Severe turbulence causes large and often rapid variations in indicated airspeed. Do not chase the airspeed.

Attitude:
Maintain wings level and pitch attitude. Use the attitude indicator as the primary instrument. Do not use sudden large control inputs.

Pitch Trim:
Maintain control of the airplane with the elevators. After establishing the trim setting for penetration speed, do not change pitch trim.

Altitude:
Large altitude variations are possible in severe turbulence; do not chase altitude. Allow altitude and airspeed to vary and maintain attitude.

Autothrottle and Thrust setting:
When severe turbulence cannot be avoided, disconnect the autothrottle and make an initial thrust setting for the target airspeed. Change thrust setting only in case of unacceptable airspeed variation.

When the autothrottle is used, use the autothrottles override (OVRD) function to avoid changes of engine thrust setting.

NOTE: Do not extend flaps, except for approach and landing

Q

Understand Fuel Trend Monitoring

A

Flight deck crews must monitor flight time and fuel burn while in the cruise phase of flight with reference to the flight plan. Fuel trend monitoring takes place for all flights beginning at the top of climb (TOC) and at least once each hour thereafter.

The resources available to assist in this process are:
-How Goes It Page
-Expanded flight release
-PERF DATA page

When during the flight the PIC determines unanticipated circumstances may result in landing with less than Minimum Fuel, request air traffic delay information from ATC in order to make a determination when a fuel status declaration is necessary
