force field analysis Flashcards
force field analysis
allows for a business to determine if the change is worth following through
Outlines the process of determining which force drives and which resist a proposed change.
the strength of drive should outweigh the strength of the restrain.
step 1: Define the change
This provides the change team conducting the analysis is clear and understanding of what is to be implemented.
step 2: Identify the Driving and Restraining forces
The manager or change team, identifying the forces. Bth forces will pull in operate directions and ultimately the force that is greater will decide if the change will be successful or not.
step 3: Analyse the forces and provide weighting and ranking
analyse each force and determine how powerful each one is. each force is given a weighting from 1-5. the aim is that the drive force should be more than restrain. forces are also ranked in order of most powerful at top so that the team can see the key drivers and resisters.
step 4: Create an action plan and implement response
one each force is analysed, the action plan is developed to overcome the key restraining forces and to promote drivers.
step 5: Evaluate the response
once performed, the change team should evaluate the work to determine if it has been effective in altering the strength of any of the forces, this provides a clear picture of the change and what the business will be faced with.
example of force field analysis

- look in book
advantages of force field analysis
- provides managers a clear indication of forces for and against the change
- provides clear actions that can be used to minimise strength of restraining forces
- can help to determine if the changes is worth pursuing
- identifies most critical factors impacting the change
disadvantages of force field analysis
- both identifying forces and weighting of the factors is subjective
- strong focus on the current state, with a lack of focus on the future state
- conducting a thorough force field analysis requires time, effort and resources.
