FOCS Models Flashcards
1
Q
Communication Definition
A
Systemic Process in which people interact symbols and create meaning
2
Q
Systems Defn
A
- Takes place within established systems
- Parts of a system are interdependent and continually interact
3
Q
Process Defn
A
- Communication is a process → Ongoing and dynamic
- Always in motion, moving forward and changing continually
4
Q
Symbols Defn
A
- We rely on symbols because one does not have access to one another’s thoughts and feelings
- Symbols are abstract, arbitrary and ambiguous
5
Q
Meanings Defn
A
- Definition focuses on meanings
- Meanings are the significance bestowed on phenomena
6
Q
Two Levels of meaning
A
- Content Level → Literal meaning
- Relationship Level → Deeper meaning
7
Q
Harold Laswell Model
A
-One way process
-Straightforward manner from sender to receiver
8
Q
Shannon and Weaver Model
A
- Added the concept of noise to Laswell
- Limitations:
- Models portray one direction
- Passive model
9
Q
Interactive Model Strengths
A
- Feedback is added to the Linear Model
- Encoding and Decoding Meaning is added (Same for Source & Receiver)
-Wilbur Schramm: The more the communicators’ field of experience overlap, the better they understand each other
10
Q
Limitations of Interactive Model
A
- Communication is not one-way but simultaneous
- Communication changes over time as a result of what happens between people
- Eg. Strangers to Friends
11
Q
Transactional Model Strengths
A
- Dynamism is added to the model as ‘dynamism is not captured’ -
Wood
- Simultaneous - not linear or sequential
- No existence of the Sender vs Receiver distinction
- Volatile
- With more shared experiences, this intersection increases
