Flight Management - Navigation Flashcards
ILS tuning inhibited when:
A/P engaged and LOC or GS captured
Only FD on, either LOC or GS captured and aircraft below 500
On ground, LOC alive, aircraft within 45 degrees LOC And GS > 40 knots
A/P engaged or FD on and either LOC or GS captured
HUD takeoff mode active for 5 sec on ground
If all three FMCS fail, or if all the large displays fail, how can you tune the left ILS?
ALTN NAV RADIO page 2/2 on a TCP
SINGLE SOURCE APPROACH EICAS?
One ILS has failed
Data from remaining ILS displayed on both sides
ATP?
Alerting and Transponder Control Panel
If ATP fails, how can you control the transponder?
Through a TCP
Push MENU button
Select ALERT/XPDR CTRL
If a transponder becomes inoperative?
The TCP senses the fault and automatically transfers to the remaining TCP
How is the WX radar managed?
Through the TCP
Where does the radar display?
On the MAP, MAP CTR and the mini-map
When does weather radar self-test?
On power-up, during each sweep, and descending through 2300 AGL
How many FMCS are there?
3
When auto-tuned, there is a letter next to the VOR frequency. What does this letter mean?
P?
P=procedure autotuning
R=route autotuning (on active route)
A=autotuning determined by FMC best position
M=manually tuned
Does VOR tuning inhibit autotuning?
Yes
Does DME manual tuning inhibit DME autotuning?
No
When does the approach phase begin?
First waypoint of the procedure sequences, or when the runway is the active waypoint and the distance to go is less than 25 miles
When does climb phase begin and end
Begins at thrust reduction for climb and ends at T/C
When is cruise phase?
T/C to TOD
When is descent phase?
TOD to start of approach phase
Flight Complete Phase?
30 seconds free shutdown, flight complete phase clears the active flight plan and load data
How close to route must aircraft be to sequence a waypoint?
Must be within 21 miles, unless on an offset route
If GPS off, how do you position aircraft for takeoff?
Pressing TOGA will position aircraft to takeoff runway threshold , or position shift position, if entered
What is the polar region as defined by the 787 database?
82N and up, except for that region defined by 80W to 170W and north of 73N
What are the flight deck indications that the aircraft is referenced to true north?
White box around TRU at top of both PFD and ND
CDU legs page will display a “T” next to the leg course data
If heading reference is TRU in the descent phase, what indication will you see?
An amber box around TRU on both PFD and ND
When would you select TRUE with the HEADING REF switch?
When operating the autopilot in the polar region in other than LNAV
NAV INERTIAL SYS?
IRS failed in polar region
All autopilot and AFDS modes fail
Entry of a reference heading on the POS INIT page restores HDG HOLD and HDG SEL
Heading must be renewed every 10 mins
GLS continues to supply navigation data and active route information still available
IRU position graphic?
GPS?
Asterisk on ND
TIE fighter
What is the supposition of ANP?
Airplane position estimated to be within ANP circle 95% of the time
SINGLE FMC?
Two FMCS have failed in flight
Third FMC has taken over
All data retained, but LNAV and VNAV deselect
The flight plan will have to be deactivated and LNAV and VNAV deselected
What are the indications if all FMCS fail?
FMC
loss of PFD mini map
Loss of ND maps
Loss of CDU pages on MFD
Loss of both LNAV and VNAV
When armed for takeoff, when does LNAV engage?
At 50 feet, when laterally within 2.5nm of the active route leg
LNAV BANK ANGLE LIM?
The FMC looks 5 mins ahead and gauges the LNAV course change. It may limit the bank angle to preclude a loss of airspeed or altitude. This message will be displayed
FMC HOLD AIRSPACE
FMC evaluates the need for a bank limit 3 min from a hold
If it determines the hold will be outside of the protected airspace, this is the EICAS that will be displayed
If armed for takeoff, when does VNAV engage?
At 400 feet above field elevation
VNAV STEP CLIMB
Climb is not initiated within 5 minutes after passing a step climb point
Pressing the speed selector?
Same actions as speed intervene
Pressing the altitude selector?
Same actions as altitude intervene
Where is the end of descent point calculated (for all but VOR approaches)?
50 feet above the runway threshold
What is the end of descent point for VOR approaches?
The missed approach point
THRUST REQUIRED in the CDU help window?
Speed is more than 15 knots below target and autothrottles are not active
DRAG REQUIRED in the CDU help window?
Speed is more than Vmo/Mmo - 16kts
With VNAV, what is the importance of the 50nm point before TOD?
If you press the altitude selector before this point (with a lower-than-cruise altitude selected), the FMC will re-cruise to the selected altitude.
Within 50nm, the aircraft will start a shallow descent and capture the descent path
FMC transitions to the approach phase when:
Descent mode is active and flaps are down
Airplane has sequences the first waypoint of the approach
The airplane is on a direct to intercept course-to the active waypoint and the distance is less than 12 nm
The MAP is the active waypoint and the distance to go is less than 25 nm
In the approach phase, MCP altitude can be set above the airplane altitude for the missed approach. If MCP altitude is ______, then VNAV continues to command a __________.
300 feet above airplane altitude
Descent
If LNAV is available on the Missed Approach, when does LNAV automatically activate?
When autopilot is engaged?
When autopilot is not engaged?
With autopilot engaged, 200 feet
With autopilot not engaged, 50 feet
In a missed approach, what is the new cruise altitude?
The higher of the MCP altitude, or the highest altitude in the missed approach procedure
NAV INERTIAL SYS?
Both AHRUs and IRUs have failed
Can the FMCS still operate without the IRS?
Yes
The GPS units provide position and track data
FMC can still provide flight planning, navigation and performance info
ND maps still available
Are LNAV and VNAV available without IRS?
No
How do you access alternate navigation?
Through the NAV button on any of the operable TCPs
