DET FIRE ENG L/R
Both fire loops of respective engine have failed
Indications of engine fire:
Fire bell
Master Warning lights
FIRE ENGINE L/R EICAS
Engine fire switch illuminates
Engine fire switch unlocks
FUEL CONTROL switch illuminates
Indications of engine overheat:
Caution beep
Master CAUTION lights
OVERHEAT ENG L/R EICAS
When are the engine fire switches unlocked?
Will automatically unlock in the event of a fire warning
OR
When FUEL CONTROL switch in CUTOFF
Manually unlocked with override switch
Pulling fire switch:
Arms both fire extinguishers
Closes engine and spar valves
Closes engine anti-ice valve
Trips engine generators off
Shuts off fluid to engine-driven hydraulic pump
Depressurizes engine-driven hydraulic pump
Removes power from T/R isolation valve
APU fire system
Fire detection and extinguishing
Dual fire detector loops
No overheat protection
Both loops must detect fire
APU fire will automatically shut down APU
If fault detected in one loop, single loop ops
DET FIRE APU
APU fire detection system failed
Both loops failed
Indications of APU fire:
Fire bell
Master WARNING lights
FIRA APU EICAS
APU fire switch illuminates
APU fire switch unlocks
Pulling APU fire switch out:
Arms the APU fire extinguisher bottle
Closes APU fuel valve
Closes APU inlet door
Trips APU generator field and breaker
Shuts down APU if automatic shutdown did not occur
Sequence of automatic shutdown of APU due to fire:
On ground with both engines off?
APU will shut down immediately
After 15 seconds the fire extinguisher will automatically discharge (gives time for APU fuel valve to close
On ground with engines off, an APU fire signal from either fire loop causes an APU shutdown and extinguisher bottle discharge
How many APU fire extinguisher bottles?
One
Where is the APU ground control fire panel located?
On P40 panel, on back of nose gear strut
Main wheel well fire system?
Dual detector channels
Overheat and fire detection
No fire extinguishing
Indications of Main Wheel Well Fire:
Fire bell
Master WARNING lights
FIRE WHEEL WELL EICAS
Indications of Main Wheel Well overheat warning
Caution beeper
Master CAUTION lights
OVERHEAT WHEEL WELL EICAS
Cargo fire suppression?
Provided for 330 minute ETOPS
Smoke detection and fire extinguishing
How many smoke detectors in 787-9?
18 detectors in fwd compartment
11 in aft compartment, two of which in bulk
How many cargo smoke detectors in 787-8?
14 detectors in fwd compartment
8 in the aft, including 2 in the bulk
What is disabled if smoke in aft cargo compartment?
The HF radios
What causes fire warning in a cargo compartment?
If two smoke detectors in the same compartment detect fire/overheat
If one detector fails, then a single smoke detector can cause a fire warning
Indications of cargo fire:
Fire bell
Master WARNING lights
FIRE CARGO FWD/AFT EICAS
CARGO FIRE (FWD or AFT) illuminates
How many fire bottles for cargo fire extinguishing?
7
2 hi pressure
5 low pressure
In flight, a cargo fire is indicated. Describe how the system operates
In flight, a fire warning will cause immediate automatic discharge of two fire bottles into the affected compartment
CARGO FIRE DISCH light
BOTTLE DISCH CARGO EICAS
Remaining fire bottles will discharge at reduced rate after a 15 minute delay
If land within 15 minute delay, only one remaining bottle will discharge at reduced rate
On ground, if CARGO FIRE DISCH switch is pressed, what happens?
3 bottles will discharge,
2 at high rate,
1 at reduced rate

Pushing CARGO FIRE ARM switch:
Arms all fire bottles Arms selected extinguisher valves Turns off both lower recircs Shuts off cargo heat Commands packs to min air flow Shuts off bulk vent system (AFT) Shuts off lav/galley vent fans (AFT) Associated equip cooling to OVRD Shuts off misc equip cooling fan (FWD) Shuts off IFE cooling Shuts off NGS Shuts off door 4 galley chillers (AFT) Outflow valves to 50/50 flow Shuts off zonal dryer fans
Pressing FIRE/OVHT TEST switch:
Fire bell
Nose W/W horn (if on ground)
FIRE TEST IN PROG EICAS
Master WARNING lights
Engine fire switch lights
APU fire warning light
Cargo fire warning lights
Fuel control switch warning lights
Nose W/W APU FIRE warning light
FIRE TEST FAIL EICAS
Fire test has failed
One of the following indicated as reason:
DET FIRE ENG L/R
DET FIRE APU
DET FIRE CARGO (FWD or AFT)
DET FIRE WHEEL WELL
Hold fire test switch until:
FIRE TEST PASS
or
FIRE TEST FAIL
