15
Q

Explain why fat has more kcalories per gram than carbohydrate and protein do

A

Triglycerides can either be used right away or stored in adipose tissue. Large amount of energy can be stored without a great increase in body size/weight

16
Q

Identify the three basic processes of energy metabolism

A

(1) conversion to Acetyl CoA, (2) TCA cycle and (3) electron transport chain

17
Q

Explain why eating more food does not lead to unlimited energy (ATP) production

A

Because our body uses what it needs and stores or excretes the rest

18
Q

Know the end products of metabolism

A

CO2, H2O, ATP

19
Q

CHO classification

A

mono, di and oligosaccharides

20
Q

Identify food sources from each class of carbohydrate and if/where they would be found in the body

A

Simple sugars: apple lactose: milk Glucose: OJ Fructose: fruits

21
Q

whole grain

A

a grain that has the endosperm, germ and bran

22
Q

refined grain

A

processed and only the endosperm is left

23
Q

enriched grain

A

refined grain that has nutrients added back in

24
Q

unenriched grain

A

stripped of nutrients and not added back in

25
Q

How does the body regulate blood sugar levels

A

Blood concentration is regulated by the liver and hormones in the pancreas. After eating and there are high levels of blood glucose insulin is secreted to lower levels. A few hours after eating glucagon is secreted to raise levels by signaling liver cells to break down glycogen into glucose

26
Q

hypoglycemia

A

low blood sugar

27
Q

hyperglycemia

A

high blood sugar

28
Q

type 1 diabetes

A

insulin deficiency

29
Q

type 2 diabetes

A

insulin resistance

30
Q

different types of lips

A

triglycercides and fatty acids, phospholipids and sterols
