Fieldwork - Human Flashcards
What was the enquiry questions for your human fieldwork?
How and why are there are variations in quality of life for different areas within Bournemouth: Boscombe and Queens Park?
Why did we choose the enquiry question – secondary data?
Queens Park and Boscombe or a mile apart but have very different standards of living and quality of life. Census data from 2011 shows the standard of living in Queens Park is far better than Boscombe with Boscombe having far worse deprivation
What were our methods?
Test 1: quantitative test measuring environmental quality survey
Test 2: qualitative test - perception of how quality of life was different in Queens Park and Boscombe
How did you complete the environmental quality survey?
Systematic sampling - measured on both main road and one quieter street in each area
Did 3 EQS in each area
Measured 7 factors - noise, Condition of buildings, noise/litter/vandalism, traffic, green and open space.
Used bi polar scale (-2 worst 2 best) and added total score together
How did you complete your Perception of how quality of life was different in Queens Park and Boscombe
Systematic sampling - before going to area we placed dot in middle of our map and went to nearest building from that dot and took photo.
Annotated diagram with factor such as: House type density and quality, green space, traffic, proximity to services, air-quality – as these would show us how we perceived
What were the presentation techniques?
Radar graph to show Environmental quality - quantitative (pentagon thing)
Annotated diagram of housing/buildings
What were the conclusions?
Building quality is worse in Boscombe as pictures showed us
Environmental survey showed average of Queens Park was 1.5 compared to -0.15 in Boscombe meaning Queens Park environmental quality is much better
How could you improve the environmental quality survey for next time?
-5 to +5 scoring system
Not having zero as middle point
Used noise meter instead of subjective
How could you improve the annotated photos for next time?
Use different people to undertake same task
Complete questionnaires to find out residents views - might actually be great place to live
