What is urbanisation?
A rise in the percentage of people living in urban areas compared to rural areas
What parts of the world have the fastest growing cities
Asia and Africa. Kampala, Uganda is the fastest growing city in the world
Why does Asia have more growing cities than the rest of the world?
Previously, the larger cities were in the most developed countries but now the developing countries are growing much quicker therefore their cities will be larger.
What is the percentage of population living in urban areas in developed countries?
Mostly between 70-80%
Where the worlds megacities located?
Most of the worlds megacities are located in the northern hemisphere. There are no megacities in South America or Africa
What is a world city?
A city that plays a disproportionate role in world affairs
What are the pull factors in rural urban migration?
Better access to health and education services
Better quality of life
Job oppurtunities
What are the push factors in rural urban migration
Lack of jobs
Poor health and education services
Environment and climate eg. Lack of food
What is a megacity
A city with a population of over 10 million people
Why is London considered a megacity despite having a smaller population?
Because if you include the population of the built up area in and around London, it is 11million
What is the change in the megacities globally?
By 2015 only 25% of the worlds megacities were in high income countries. The rest were emerging countries eg. Shanghai, Mumbai.
What is a primacy city
A city of importance and influence larger than their size suggests
What effect do primacy cities have globally?
Investment - London and New York are the worlds biggest financial centres
Airline traffic - London has the most passengers in its airports per year (120million)
Decision makers - home to TNC headquarters who can decide where economic activity occurs
Political decisions - government decisions can affect people globally
What are the Alpha++ countries and why
New York and London because they are the two main financial districts
What is the third alpha++ city that is being considered?
Tokyo because they are the largest financial district in the eastern world.
