A

A

Good access for tourists is allowed - so revenue can be earned.
May be established to protect a particular species
Usually covers large area so animal migration can still occur

A

Roads, hotels etc. for tourists can cause pollution and damage ecosystem.
Sometimes parks are managed to protect tourists from animals. They are kept apart which can prevent animal migration

How does sustainable forestry work?

A

Extracting timber from an area without having to damage the whole forested area in the long run. After trees are cut down, there is replanting with native taiga tree species to conserve species diversity.

A

Logging companies are required to re-plant after logging
Can limit the number of trees felled or the size of an area cut
Selective logging means more trees protected and careful replanting is established

A

Some countries such as Russia struggle to enforce this due to corruption.
Often companies are given logging rights for 25 years. They cut the trees down quicker than they regrow.
It doesn’t earn as much money as clear felling - not popular with loggers

Why do some people think its important to protect Taiga forests?

A

They store lots of carbon - deforestation will release it and enhance global warming
Some species are only found in Taiga so deforestation could lead to extinction
Many Indigenous people depend on the forest for their traditional way of life

A

Demand of resources is increasing - people need wood, fuel, and minerals that the forests provide.
Forest industries provide lots of jobs
