1.2 Flashcards
How do tree rings show climate change
Each ring shows a hear of growth. Changes in shape and size show conditions of that year
How do ice cores show climate change
Contains bubbles of air from each year. Scientists analyse bubbles to see levels of CO2. Can measure yearly temp. from levels of O2
How can climate change be measured using historical sources?
Records of weather/from diaries etc. Eg. Frozen thames was documented.
What is eccentricity?
The changing of the Earths orbit over time
What is obliquity?
Tilt - earth is tilted to create seasons.
What is precession?
The wobble of the earth as it rotates, affecting lengths of seasons and occurs every 24000yrs
How do asteroid collisions explain natural climate change?
Can eject large volumes of dust into the atmosphere, partially blocking solar radiation, cooling the earth.
How does volcanic activity affect climate change?
Can eject huge amounts of ash and dust into atmosphere which can then block out solar radiation reducing global temperatures and causing cooler periods
How does solar output variation explain climate change
The amount of radiation the Sun produces varies over time. Periods of lower solar activity are likely to lead to glacial periods. Periods of higher solar activity lead to interglacial periods
What evidence is there to show there was a roman warm period where grape vines were grown in britain?
Tree ring data - shows it was dry during period
Harvest records - shows England grew large amounts of grapes
What evidence is there to show the Dark Ages were cold and wet?
Tree ring data - very wet time means thicker rings
What evidence is there to show that there was a medieval warm period?
Ice cores - can be viewed as hotter by relative amounts of O2
What evidence is there to show there was a little ice age around 1700?
Historical records - paintings show frozen thames. Records note arctic ice reaching scotland
