Q

Describe the method of IVF as a type of fertility treatment.

A

IVF is where an egg is taken from the female and sperm is taken from the male. Doctors take the sperm and fertilise the egg which then turns into an embryo. This is replaced inside the female in the hope that it will grow into a baby.

Q

Describe the method of surrogacy as a type of fertility treatment.

A

Surrogacy is when a couple unsuccessful in having a child could find a surrogate mother: a female volunteer who will either carry the baby (through the process of a doctor planting the fertilised egg into her womb) and birth it, or allowing her own egg to be used in the fertilisation process.
