Abortion Flashcards
Define abortion.
Ending a pregnancy early so that it does not result in the birth of a child.
Give 3 verses from the Bible that gives Christians guidance on abortion.
- “You must not murder” (The 10 Commandments in Exodus)
- “You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb.” (Psalm 139:13)
- “You watched me…as I was woven together in the dark of the womb. You saw me before I was born.” (Psalm 139:15-16)
Describe what Christians think about abortion.
Christians have to decide when life truly begins in order to decide if abortion breaks the commandment not to kill.
Give some ideas for abortion.
- Economic difficulties (can’t afford it)
- Might harm the mother or the baby
- Not really alive until out of the womb
- Result of rape
- Child might have a genetic disease
- Age (too old/too young)
Give some ideas against abortion.
- Everyone has the right to life – abortion is denying the child of this
- A disease the child might have does not belittle its quality of life
- Murder/infanticide
- Psychological damage to the mother
Describe what Church of England, Methodists, Baptists think about abortion.
Church of England, Methodists and Baptists think a baby’s life does not begin until it is able to survive independently of its mother, so an abortion could be acceptable if there is risk of physical or mental health to either the mother or the baby, or if it’s a result of rape.
Describe what Catholics think about abortion.
Catholics believe life begins at conception so therefore having an abortion is wrong.
