Femoral Triangle and Adductor Canal Flashcards
What is the femoral triangle?
A triangular depression below the inguinal ligament
What is the medial boundary of the femoral triangle?
Adductor longus
What is the lateral boundary of the femoral triangle?
The sartorius muscle
Which structure forms the superior border of the femoral triangle?
The inguinal ligament
What are the contents of the femoral triangle?
Femoral artery
Femoral vein
Femoral nerve
Femoral canal
What is the femoral sheath?
Funnel shaped fascial tube that surrounds the proximal parts of femoral vessels (not nerve)
What are the three compartments of the femoral sheath?
Lateral
Intermediate
Medial
What is contained in the lateral compartment of the femoral sheath?
The femoral artery
What is contained in the intermediate compartment of the femoral sheath?
The femoral vein
What is contained in the medial compartment of the femoral sheath?
The femoral canal
What is the contents of the femoral canal?
Lymphatic vessels
Fat
Loose connective tissue
What can occur at the femoral ring?
A femoral hernia
What is the course of the adductor canal?
As the femoral neurovasculature leaves the apex of the femoral triangle the burrow beneath the musculature to form the adductor canal
The canal passes increasingly posteriorly through the thigh until it arrives at the adductor musculature
It then passes through the adductor hiatus within the tendon of adductor magnus and emerges in the popliteal fossa
What name change occurs in the femoral artery within the adductor canal and where does it occur?
Femoral artery becomes the posterior popliteal artery at the adductor hiatus
What is the contents of the adductor canal?
Femoral artery
Femoral vein
Saphenous nerve
Nerve to vastus medialis
