What is Type 1 FGM?
Clitoridectomy- partial or total removal of the clitoris or sometimes only the prepuce
What is type 2 FGM?
Excision- partial or total removal of the clitoris and labia minora with or without excision of the labia majora
What is type 3 FGM?
Infibulation- narrowing of the vaginal opening through the creation of a covering seal. The seal is formed by cutting and repositioning the inner or outer labia, with or without removal of the clitoris
What is de-infibulation?
This is opening up of the narrowed vaginal opening to allow for childbirth. reverse of infibulation
What is Re-infibulation?
Closing back up or re-narrowing of the opening of the vagina after childbirth
What is type 4 FGM?
Any other harmful procedure done to female genitalita for non-medical purposes e.g. pricking, piercing, incising, scraping and cauterising
What are possible complications of FGM?
Urinary rention difficultites Uterues, vaginal and pelvic infections Cysts complications in pregnancy and childbirth increased risk of fistula PTSD sexual dysfunction
