Outline positives and negatives of COCP (same for patch and ring)
Combined oral cotraceptive pill contains oestrogen and progesterone.
Is taken for 21 days then not taken for 7 days and then repeated. (bleed during the 7 days off the pill)
Postives:
Can regulate/reduce bleeding
Reduces risk of endometrial and ovarian cancer
Improves acne
Negatives:
Not good if regular GI upset
Increases risk of breast cancer
Increased risk of VTE and stroke
Contraindicated in:
Breast cancer
Smoking
BMI>35
What are the options for emergence contraception?
Elllaone (ulipristal acetate ) can be used up to 5 days after unprotected sex
Copper Coil- can be used up to 5 days after unprotected sex
Levonelle - can be used within 3 days of UPS
What are the benefits and negatives of Copper coil?
Positives:
Used for up to 10 years
Can be used as emergency contraception
Negatives:
Can make periods heavier or more painful
Small risk of infection in first few weeks
Outline positives and negatives of IUS (Levonorgestrel)?
Postives:
Can be used for 3-5 years
Can be used to treat heavey menstraul bleeding
Can be used as part of HRT
Fertility possible immediately after removal
Negatives:
Patients have to be able to check strings to ensure device is still in place
Small infection risk after insertion
CI: breast/endo/cervical cancer

Positives:
very reliable as don’t need to rely on patient to remember everyday
few contrindications
Negatives: Takes up to 12 months once stopped the injection to be able to conceive Have to have appointment every 12 weeks Increase in weight Increase in acne

Positives:
Few contraindications
Amenorrhea for mlst after few months
Negatives: Not good with GI upset Must be taken at same time everyday without pill free interval Headache Bloating Worse acne
