1
Q
What causes FIV?
A
FIV - a lenti virus
2
Q
What are clinical signs of FIV?
A
- more prone to infections, esp gingivostomatitis
- increases risk of LSA by 5-6x
- persistent cytopenia in advanced stage (esp neutropenia and lymphompenia)
3
Q
How is FIV transmitted?
A
bites or inoculation of contaminated blood/ saliva from infected cats
- can be transmitted in utero
4
Q
How is FIV diagnosed?
A
serology
can confirm with PCR if needed (not a good tool for screening)
- may need to repeat serology in 60d if doesn’t fit clinical picture or kittens <6m (maternal antibody interference)
- prior vaccines may interfere with certain serology testing
5
Q
How is FIV treated?
A
treat the secondary infection
prevent further transmission
