Facial Pain Flashcards
how do you assess a pain patient
physical symptoms - PAIN scores
emotional symptoms
QOL (quality of life) scores
how is pain felt
nociception peripheral nerve transmission
spinal modulation
central appreciation
what nerve transmits pain in the face
trigeminal nerve
what is meant by embryonic nerve supply
nerves supply the areas that came from the same pharyngeal arch
how do cranial nerves communicate with spinal nerves
through the nuclei
what information do autonomic nerves carry
what is going on in the tissues and pain information
why is information sent from the autonomic nerves much more distressing than somatic nerves
as it goes through the basal ganglia
what is autonomic referred pain
can get pain from one area in another
(angina presents as pain in jaw)
what is the somatic reflex arc
if you hit someones knee it will jerk
muscle contraction comes with somatic pain
what is autonomic reflex arc
when pain is present you will get sweating
(vasomotor and secretomotor responses)
what is gate control of chronic pain
if you rub the bit you have banged it does not feel sore
what is descending facilitation and inhibition
nerves comes down from the brain to spinal chord which can change the way you feel (if you are anxious these nerves tell the spinal chord to expect worse pain)
what is chronic regional pain syndrome
delocalised pain (spreads)
feeling of swelling and heat
colour change in overlying skin
autonomic changes
significantly disabling
why does chronic regional pain syndrome occur
due to autonomic nerve damage (after injury)
