Blistering Oral Disease 2 Flashcards
what is pemphigoid
subepithelial antibody attack where the antibodies cause separation of the epithelium at basement membrane and fluid fills between epidermis and connective tissues giving thick blisters
what does pemphigoid present like
thick walled blisters (full epidermis)
what is bullous pemphigoid
skin only
what is mucous membrane pemphigoid
all mucous membranes
what is cicatricial pemphigoid
mucosal with scarring
what happens at the epithelial and connective tissue junction in pemphigoid
these split at the hemi-desmosomes
what test is most helpful for pemphigoid
direct immunofluorescence
what does pemphigus look like on immunofluorescence
linear basement staining
what antibodies are most commonly bound to with immunofluorescence in pemphigoid
C3 and IgG
what is symblepharon
binding of the eye to the eyelids caused by scar tissue in pemphigoid
how do you manage pemphigoid
steroids and immune modulating drugs (azathioprine and mycophenolate)
what is pemphigus
intraepithelial bullae where blisters burst and then spread
what is characteristic to pemphigus on histology
Tzank cells
what are Tzank cells
shedding cells of epithelial layer
what do antibodies attack in pemphigus
desmosomes
