F3 - SEM1 - Why is Hong Kong often hit by tropical cyclones in summer? - 2.3 Flashcards
What is tropical cyclone?
2.3 Why is Hong Kong often hit by tropical cyclones in summer?
a low pressure system developed over tropical oceans
What is tropical cyclone?
2.3 Why is Hong Kong often hit by tropical cyclones in summer?
4 steps in tropical cyclone formation
2.3 Why is Hong Kong often hit by tropical cyclones in summer?
- air above the oceans is heated and rises when the ocean surface temperature is over 26C
- as air rises, air pressure drops. the surrounding air moves in and results in strong convection => a low pressure centre is formed
- **warm and moist air flows into the low pressure centre and rises. water vapour cools and condenses **=> provide more energy for low pressure system => strengthen low pressure system
- wind speed increases => a tropical cyclone is formed
4 steps in tropical cyclone formation
Where are the tropical cyclones that affect Hong Kong formed? Where do they usually move?
2.3 Why is Hong Kong often hit by tropical cyclones in summer?
- formed above Western Pacific Ocean
- move northwest toward South China
Where are tropical cyclones that Hong Kong are formed
