eysnecks personality theory? Flashcards
what does eysneck link personality differences to?
growing out of our genetic inheritance
criminal behaviour is genetic
personality is given
what did he relate each dimension of personality to?
functioning of there nervous system
as personality is genetic, what does this say about it?
its innate and universal
what are the dimensions of personality?
extraversion, introversion, stability, neuroticism, psychoticism
what three dimensions are linked to criminal behaviour?
extraversion, neuroticism, psychoticism
define E
look outwardly, seek attention
define N
a kind od moodiness, become easily upset or emotional
define P
mental health dimension, lack empathy, antisocial
what is the RAS?
reticular activating system
what is the RAS responsible for?
move from states of sleeping to waking,
what does the RAS connect?
the brain stem to cortex
how is E caused?
strong nervous system , high activation of the RA formation, needs more external stimuli to experience arousal
how is N caused?
low activation stimulation in the nervous system, regarding fight or flight, very jumpy and experience fight more (sympathetic)
how is P caused?
relates to hormones such as testosterone, in terms of how much the endocrine system releases, low cortisol arousal
what dimensions would a criminal have?
neurotic extrovert
more arousal needed but quick to trigger
why is the explanation simple?
fails to recongnise that behaviour may differ according to situation, does not consider bio explantion
why might research for personality gathered be invalid?
as it is self report data
what type of research is gathered for personality
self report
how might someone lie on self report data in terms of crime?
may look like P so that other inmates are scared of them
what do studies of official deliquency show?
that findings are inconsistent
is rushton and chrisjohn a strength or a weakness
strength
what did rushton and chrisjohn find?
clear relationship between P and E and high levels of deliquency
what dimension did rushton and chrisjohn not find?
N
what did Boduszek find?
found higher levels of E predicted greater probability of committing violent crimes in recidivistic inmates in a high security prison
what did steiner find? S or W
S
high levels of P linked with high levels of recidivism
what happens in the ARAS?
deals with messages along brain stem
stimulates cerebral cortex which leads to higher cortical arousal
can activated the sympathetic nervous system
what does arousal involve?
the activation of the RAS, activation of the ANS (autonomic nervous system) and activation of endocrine glands
what is the ARAS?
the ascending RAS
what does the ARAS do?
deals with messages moving through the brain stem to the brain
Activity in ARAS stimulates cerebral cortex which leads to higher cortical arousal
