What is the best way to read and study the Bible? Illustrate.

Q

What did the apostle Paul urge his fellow Christians to do, and why? (Ephesians 3:14-19)

A

Paul encouraged Christians to study God’s Word diligently so that they could understand the truth in all its dimensions. For example, he said they needed to “comprehend fully what is the breadth and length and height and depth” of the truth. In other words, they needed to get a fuller picture of its rich meaning. This would make them stronger in their faith.

Q

What is the difference between a plan and a purpose?

A

A plan is like a specific and fixed route that can lead you to your chosen destination. However, the plan can fail when a roadblock appears along the route. On the other hand, a purpose focuses on the destination itself. We know exactly where we want to complete our journey, but the route is not set. It can be adjusted as needed.

Q

Why can it be said that Jehovah’s purpose for man and the earth is “eternal”? (Ephesians 3:11)

A

Jehovah’s purpose for man and the earth can be said to be “eternal” for at least two reasons:

  1. Jehovah, “the King of eternity [lit., “the King of the ages”]” (1Ti 1:17), has allowed ages of time to pass before that purpose is fully realized.
  2. The results of the outworking of this purpose will endure into all eternity.

This “eternal purpose” relates to Jehovah’s determination to accomplish what he originally intended for mankind and the earth, despite the rebellion in Eden (Ge 1:28). Immediately after that rebellion, Jehovah formed this purpose in connection with the Christ, Jesus our Lord. He foretold the appearance of an “offspring” who would undo the damage done by the rebels (Ge 3:15; Heb 2:14-17; 1Jo 3:8). One way or another, he always succeeds because he “has made everything work for his purpose” (Prov. 16:4). The results of what Jehovah does will endure forever.
