Primary health promotion
Recommending immunizations, wearing your seatbelt, eating healthy, avoiding smoking
Examples of primary health promotion
Screening, working with the patient to detect early disease before it comes readily apparent
Secondary health promotion
Annual mammograms, colonoscopy, teaching patients who are obese about losing weight to prevent diabetes
Examples of secondary health promotion
Treatment, treating the disease to prevent or minimize complications
Tertiary health promotion
Teaching a patient to administer insulin or manage their diabetes, managing someone’s exercise or wellness, taking medication
