Excretion And Kidney Flashcards
Excretion definition
The process by which waste products of metabolism are removed from the body
Excretion organs
Lungs: excretion of CO2 and H2O
Skin: excretion of salts and H2O
Kidneys: excretion of urea, water and salts
Homeostasis definition
The maintenance of a constant internal environment
The kidneys
They are involved in filtering blood to remove unwanted substances (eg urea) and ensure balance of other substances (water/salts)
Selective reabsorption
- all glucose is reabsorbed in the proximal convoluted tubule
- some salts are reabsorbed
- some water is reabsorbed in collecting duct or loop of Henle depending on level of ADH present
Ultrafiltration
High-pressure, forcing small molecules through the fenestrations in the glomerulus
What molecules are in the glomerulus and Bowmans capsule
Glomerulus - blood cells, proteins, cells (glomerular filtrate)
Bowman capsule - water, urea, glucose, salts
