Excretion Flashcards
What is excretion?
The removal of metabolic waste from the body
Give examples of excretory organs
Humans: lungs kidneys, skin
Plants: leaves, stem, roots
Where is urea produced?
The liver
What are the main processes of the kidneys
- Filtration
- Reabsorption
- Secretionl
What are some functions of the kidneys
- Excretion
- Osmoregulation
- Water and salt regulation
- PH control
What vessel sends urine from the kidney to the bladder
Ureter
Where does filtration take place?
In the glomerulus in the bowman’s capsules
Where does reabsorption happen
The proximal convoluted tubule
Why is glomerular filtration useful
Prevents large substances from entering the nephron
How is the glomerulus adapted for optimum filtration
- Large surface area if capillaries
- Bowman’s capsule is 1 cell thick
3 pressure I greater as efferent arteriole
Where do the reabsorbed nutrients from the nephron get transported to
The renal vein
How does the production of ADH affect the amount of urine produced
Hydrated:
1. Production of ADH is low, hence distal tube is more impermeable
2. Less water absorbed, more water goes to bladder
3. Larger volume of urine
*Dehydrated:**
1. Production of ADH is high, hence distal tube is more permeable
2. More water absorbed, less water goes to bladder
3. Lower volume of urine
What are some treatments to kidney failure
Dialysis or transplant
