Blood Flashcards
What is the composition of blood?
Plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets
What are antibodies?
Produced by white blood cells in other to combine with and kill foreign substances
What are the main proteins found in plasma
Antibodies and clotting proteins
Where are blood cells made
Bone marrow
Where to dead red blood cells get broken down?
Liver
What are some adaptations of red blood cells
- Flexible membrane
- Biconcave shape for larger surface area
Where is oxygen stored in red blood cells
Haemoglobin
What is the role of red blood cells
Transport oxygen
What are some differences between red and white blood cells
Red: Smaller than white, have a definite shape, no nuclei, don’t live long
White: Larger than red, nk definite shape, have a nucleus, live for a few days, less numerous than red (700r : 1w)
What is leukaemia
A form of cancer where white cells are formed too quickly
What is the role of white blood cells?
Defend the body against infections
What is the role of platelets
To clot the blood
What are the functions of blood clotting
- Reduce loss of blood
- Prevent entry of microorganisms
What are the functions of blood
- Transfer food, waste product, hormones etc
- Transport and insulate heat
- Transport oxygen
- Defend against disease and infection
What are the 2 categories of white blood cells
Lymphocytes and monocytes
What are the functions of lymphocytes
Make antibodies
What is the function of monocytes
Scavenge throughout the body and surround and digest bacteria
Why is it important for recipient and donor to have the same blood type
To avoid blood clumping
