Take Over as Master:
(Newly appointed master)
- Put your name and CoC # on the front cover of the OLB and make an entry in the narrative “ Fraser Gow takes over as Master of M/Y ?”
- If due to proceed to sea:
- Check the passage plan & sign
- carry out drills to ascertain level of competency of crew in emergency situation
You have to go on the crew list as a captain (MSF4157)
If you are in doubt about your Safe Manning, you shoudl seek clarification from flag state.
Exam Situation #1
Examiner shows you a situation (potential collision)
You respond with:
You immediately say:
- I am going to take a series of compass bearings to ascertain if the Risk of collision exists. Risk of collision exists when the copass bearing of an approaching vessel does not change or appreciable change and range is decreasing
- The Examiner will tell you if the ship is on a steady bearing*
- State the type of vessel
- Length
- Direction of travel
- U/W - M/W?
- Aspect
- Special Conditions
State whether they are the give way vessel. If you are the stand on vessl you say:
- I am the standon vessel therefore I SHALL keep my course and speed - Rule 17 (a)(i)
Ascertain if you are: ‘giveway’ or ‘standon’ or ‘overtaking’ or ‘RV or ‘Head on’ - Apply Rule 18. Responsibilities between vessels.
The Examiner informs you the vessel keeps coming:
- I would sound 5 short blasts of my ships whistle and continue to monitor the situation.
- I would also put a helmsman on the wheel and switch to hand steering
Examiner says the vessel keeps coming:
- I MAY take action to avoid collision by my manoeuver alone, as soon as it becomes appartent the vessel required to keep out of the way is not taking apprioriate action in compliance with the rules. Rule 17a(ii)
- I will sound one short blast of my ships whistle and make a bold alteration of course to starboard and let her pass down my port side
- Examiner will ask if you can turn to port?*
- I SHALL avoid an alteration of course to port for a vessel on my own port side Rule17(c)
Examiner asks when shall you take action?
- When from cause, the vessel required to keep her course and speed finds herself so close that collision cannot be avoided by the action of the give way vessel alone, she SHALL take such action as will best aid to avoid collision Rule 17(b)
- You should only say “ Best aid to avoid collision”
If the Examiner asks if you can turn to port in this case, you say:
- If it best aids to avoid collision or gives a glancing blow then I can turn to port. Rule 17 (b)
- *
The OOW has entered restricted visability.
What 10 things would you expect him to do?
- Call the master
- Place a helmsman at the wheel
- Have engines ready for immedate manoeuvre
- Start fog signals
- Increase the lookout
- Reassess safe speed (thing about location, other traffic etc
- Turn on Navigation lights
- Close all watertight doors
- Commence systematic plotting of all radar targets
- Open Bridge wing doors and stop any noisy work in the vicinity
Examiner gives you the start of a plot in Fog,
You tell him:
- I have an initial indication of a vessel coming towards me with a small CPA
- However, I have scanty information and must continue the plot
Once you have the full information tell the examiner:
- Which point is ‘O’
- Which point is ‘A’
- Inform him that ‘OA’ is the relative track of the other vessel, showing a close CPA
- If you use the distance between ‘OA’ you can work out a TCPA
You can then complete the ‘OAW’ Triangle
- Know what your speed is… and then
- Plot ‘W’
- Describe ‘WO’ indicating direction
- Describe ‘WA’ indicating direction and place vessel at ‘O’
- Once this is done you can apply Rule 19 and inform the examiner of your action under this rule
- He may tell you that you hafve made an alteration of cours and may ask you what affect it will have on the plot!
ICE ACCRETION
- Increased top weight moving ‘G’ up and reducing GM
- Alter course and head for warmer waters
- Alter course and / or reduce speed to best reduce freezing spray from adding to the accumilating ice
- Risk Assess and see if it’s safe for crew to be on deck and remove with steam, rubber hammers etc
- Must report unexpected Ice by all available means
- Nearest coast guard VIA Sat-C
- Must report unexpected Ice by all available means
- NAVTEXT Ice reports = Letter C
What is a safe CPA?
&
How often should you plot your position?
- State CPA’s in the masters night orders - not the standing orders as it is too general and every voyage has different circumstances
Rule of thumb for plotting your positon:
- Half the time it would take to get to the nearest danger!
- 6nm from land @ 12kts
- 30 mins to nearest danger (land)
- Therefore fix postion / fixing interval should be every 15 minutes
How would you check the Gyro and Mag Compass?
- Coastal = Transits
- Deep Sea = Amplitudes or Azimuths of the Sun\
