What is the Small Animal Exemption Scheme (SAES)?
certain medicines for small animals (pets) are exempt from marketing authorisation requirements of the VMR
minor species:
rabbits, ferrets, small rodents, caged birds etc
What is the criteria for the SAES?
active ingredient must be approved, not antibiotic
manufactured with good practice
correctly labelled
oral/ topical administration- water/ fish
only sold in packs (single treatment)
What are some hazards in a pharmacy?
Dangerous Substances- needs to be clearly labelled, appropriate storage and PPE
Out of Date Medications- needs appropriate stock rotation, checking dates- use old before new stock
Sharps- use PPE, disposal training of staff, don’t misuse drugs (COSSH)- knowledge of sharps bin
Spillages- wet floor signs, keep tidy/ clean, record spillage waste- use appropriate storage
Busy/ Trip Hazards- boxes stored away, tidy environment, limit access of small space- prevents crowding and injuries
Flammable Materials- no open flames/ smoking- prevents fire, warning signs and hazard labels
Open Products- clearly marking them, identifiable- prevents misuse and given to wrong patient- H&S + AWA + COSHH
Untrained/ Public- shadow to prevent injury, signage to remind of regulations/ restrictions- inductions of work experience/ newly hired staff- locking restricted possessions/ medications
