What are the requirements of Schedule 1 drugs?
controlled drugs, little/ no therapeutic value
greatest restrictions- locked in cabinet
not found in practice- home possession ILLEGAL
What are the requirements of Schedule 2 drugs?
locked cabinet, receipt/ storage in register
written requests made to wholesaler
E.G: morphine, methadone, pethidine (opioids)
What are the requirements of Schedule 3 drugs?
no requirement of recording on register, locked cabinet, written requests to wholesaler
E.G: buprenorphine, pentobarbital, phenobarbital
What are the requirements of Schedule 4 drugs?
not necessary to be locked in cabinet,
ketamine- substance of abuse RCVS recommends register/ locked away
E.G: anabolic/ androgenic steroids-
What are the requirements of Schedule 5 drugs?
exempt from full control, low strength products, invoices kept for 5 years
E.G: morphine, codeine
What legislation enforces this system?
The Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 (2001)
